GETTING STARTED

The below booklets each cover a different area that can be a challenge for people moving from prison to the community. The advice is practical and easy to read with contact numbers and details for the agencies that many prisoners will need to deal with. These resources are also available in Vietnamese.

These resources were funded by and produced in partnership with Corrections Victoria who holds responsibility for printing and distributing the material to people about to be released from prison.

BOOKLET 1: THE FIRST WEEK

This booklet provides a checklist and planner to help you prepare for the important things you need to do leading up to release, and during the first week after release from prison.

BOOKLET 2: HOUSING

This booklet provides information about various housing options and gives details of some of the housing support services that are available to help.

BOOKLET 3: IDENTIFICATION

This booklet explains why we all need identification, and provides information about how to go about obtaining it.

BOOKLET 4: ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS

If you want to avoid or control your drug or alcohol use you will need support to do so. This booklet provides information about how to stay clean and find that support.

BOOKLET 5: CENTRELINK

This booklet provides information about Centrelink services and entitlements. It also explains your obligations and provides a page where you can list your appointments to ensure you don't miss any.

BOOKLET 5: COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS & PAROLE

This booklet contains information about the important obligations of those who have been released from prison with any Post Release Order, including parole.

BOOKLET 7: EMPLOYMENT

Finding a job after prison is not always easy. This booklet provides information, advice and hints about how to maximise your employment chances.

BOOKLET 8: RETURNING TO FAMILY

Returning to your family and reconnecting with friends is an important part of getting out, but may take hard work. This booklet will help you think about some of the challenges.

BOOKLET 9: WOMEN'S TRANSITION

The information in this booklet is in addition to the Getting Started series. Women leaving prison deal with many of the same issues as men, but they also face different challenges. This booklet recognises those differences.

BOOKLET 10: INDIGENOUS

This booklet is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people getting out of prison. The other books are still important but this booklet describes the extra services available to Indigenous people.
